Jakob ziguras
poetry – Philosophy – translations
Jakob Ziguras is a Polish-Greek Australian poet, translator, and philosopher. After initially training in fine arts and painting, he turned to philosophy, earning his doctorate and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Sydney.
Jakob’s poetry is distinguished by intellectual depth, emotional complexity, and cultural richness held in formal precision. His debut collection, Chains of Snow, was shortlisted for the 2014 Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, followed by The Sepia Carousel (2016) and Venetian Mirrors (2025).
Drawing on his multicultural background, Jakob, through his poetry and translation work, builds bridges across traditions. His translations from Polish include Jan Kott’s Kaddish: Pages on Tadeusz Kantor (Seagull Books, 2020), verse by Bolesław Leśmian, and Adam Zagajewski’s essays on Stanisław Barańczak. In 2019, he co-curated and translated a major portfolio for the New England Review (Vol. 40, No. 2), introducing eighteen Polish poets to the Anglophone world. Through projects such as Red Room Poetry’s Rhyming the Dead, he continues to explore the intersections of exile, poetic legacy, and the philosophy of translation.
